October 13 2011. What a fantastic day. We first saw Mini Migaloo from the headland at Narooma and had to get a closer look, we left the wharf at 3:00 pm and found MiniMigaloo and mother 500 metres from the entrance to Narooma. With our boat “Dreamtime” just ticking along slowly, little MiniMigaloo started performing for us, I lost count of the number of times it breached but I managed to take more than 400 photos.Truly a memorable experience. Having seen Migaloo 17 years ago and going to every pod of whales we could since then to get another look, today made up for the wait.

For more information and to see photos of this amazing day see – http://www.naroomacharters.com.au/minimigaloo.html

The previous two days have seen whale watchers experience calm waters and lots of whales off shore from Narooma. The whales are slowly making their way south, many with calves in tow. Recent sightings have included land based spots such as Carters Beach in Kianga where we were advised that one humpback was about 200m off the coast. The other sighting came in via a very excited Wazza from Lighthouse Charters who was sitting on the south-east end of Montague Island with a boat full of passengers and about 1/2 a dozen whales.

Personally, I am wondering if we are going to get a visit from the Orcas this year. The past 3 years they have been seen around Montague Island. Before that they were only seen spasmodically, so seeing them back here each year is great. The boats are polished, the weather is superb, the ocean is calm. Get ready for some unforgettable experiences in Eurobodalla this year.

The 2010 southern Humpback Migration began as early as mid-August, with non-breeding whales still dawdling north being met by those heading south. Some days there were pods as far as the eye could see and many times Montague Island was literally surrounded by them. Through September and into October boat-based whale watchers could observe them feeding from not all that far offshore to out past Montague. Mid October saw the mothers and calves in close as well as larger whales offshore. November had mostly mothers and calves in close.

The charter boat fleet operating from Narooma ferried many people out to interact with these mighty mammals, and Montague Island Tours day visitors and overnight stayers had the added bonus of the Island’s nesting Gulls and Terns and evening penguin viewing to add to that special Spring feeling.

The last week or so has seen an increasing number of mothers and calves coming through. This makes for excellent shore-based whale watching. I cycled some of the Narooma-Dalmeny cycleway keeping up easily with one pair including a very agile calf. Then to cap it off I was the guide on a Montague Island Evening Tour which had a mother and calf that were both so energetic it makes one wonder how they cold make it down to Antarctica at this rate! Breaches, jumps, tail slaps and many of these were almost synchronised between the two!

Fourteen whales entertained us between Narooma bar and Montague Island this morning. They were all juveniles and most of the time were busy filling their cavernous mouths. We were treated to some tail flapping and a couple of great breeches fairly close to the boat. But when they came right over to us they were mainly just feeding. 120 dolphins swam with the boat on the way back into Narooma some people wound up quite wet standing at the front of the bow watching but were also quite exhilarated. A group of locals who had never been out before couldn’t believe it had taken them so long to get around to going out.

Next scheduled departure is 9.30am Thursday 7 October (subject to minimum numbers and weather conditions). Call 0408 428 857 to book your seat! www.islandchartersnarooma.com.au.

Region X cruised out of Mossy Point this morning with a full crew of sea kayakers. Fishermen had reported up to 100 whales out around 5 miles off Burrewarra Point on sunday, the best day they had ever seen, a few reported they forgot they were supposed to be fishing!

alas today the whales were still out in deep water, too far offshore for our group to reach, instead we had dolphins, yummy cake, brewed coffee and crystal clear waters as we explored the secluded beaches and bay of the Burrewarra

Point Sanctuary zones. Magical Morning on the water regardless.

Glass bottom kayak tour on Wednesday, Next Whale watching Sea Kayak tour on Saturday 9.10.10
